Should you charge for gift wrapping on Shopify?
Choose between complimentary and paid gift wrap by accounting for packaging, labor, positioning, and the choices customers actually need.
Complimentary wrapping can strengthen a premium promise. Paid wrapping can protect the real cost of materials and labor. The right choice depends on the service being offered, not on whether “free” sounds more generous.
Begin with the cost and operating model, then decide what the customer should see. A simple paper wrap added to a high-margin order and a rigid presentation box assembled by hand should not automatically share the same price.
Calculate the cost per wrapped unit
Include the paper, box, ribbon, tissue, card, label, and any protective material used only for the service. Add the average packing time and the extra handling it creates. If packaging must be stored, counted, or shipped in a larger parcel, include those operational effects too.
The result is not necessarily the selling price. It is the boundary that tells you whether complimentary wrapping is a deliberate acquisition or loyalty cost, or an unmeasured margin leak.
Use complimentary wrapping when simplicity is the value
Free wrapping is easiest to understand when there is one standard option and the cost is already supported by product margin or brand positioning. It can also work as a temporary offer, provided the store states the dates and has enough packaging capacity for the expected volume.
Avoid showing a crossed-out wrapping price unless the store is genuinely running a promotion. “Complimentary” is a complete explanation; artificial reference pricing adds noise and may create compliance questions in some markets.
Charge when the shopper is choosing a distinct service
A paid option makes sense when the packaging has meaningful material or labor cost, when several styles have different costs, or when gift presentation is an upgrade rather than a baseline brand experience. Give each option a photo, plain name, and exact price before the shopper selects it.
Record the service as a Shopify-priced item so the cart total and order details agree. Decide whether the packaging is taxable under the store's actual tax setup, and confirm the result in a test checkout rather than treating a label in the app as tax advice.
A practical middle path: offer one complimentary standard wrap and one paid premium option only if the distinction is visible and the fulfillment team can reliably deliver both.
Measure the decision without inventing demand
Track how often wrapping is selected, the mix of free and paid choices, the packaging used, and the fulfillment time it adds. A low take rate may mean the offer is unnecessary, but it can also mean the choice is hard to find, the image is unclear, or the price does not match the presentation.
Review the service after a full gifting period. Keep the option set small enough that each choice earns its storage, setup, and customer-facing complexity.
