How to set a maximum purchase quantity on Shopify
Choose the right scope and enforcement point for a purchase cap, then explain the limit before a shopper reaches checkout.
A maximum of two can mean “two per cart,” “two per order,” or “two per customer for the entire launch.” Those policies sound similar on a banner and require very different enforcement.
Before choosing a setting, write down what is being counted, over which period, and for whom. Most quantity-limit problems begin when one of those details stays implicit.
Define the boundary in one sentence
“A cart may contain no more than two units of this variant” is a cart rule. “A customer may buy no more than two units during the launch” requires a way to recognize earlier purchases and the same buyer across visits. A checkout rule alone cannot reliably turn the first policy into the second.
Also decide whether variants count separately. If a limited print comes in two sizes, does one of each satisfy a limit of two, or may the customer buy two of each size? Write examples before configuring the catalog target.
Use the narrowest scope that matches the reason
A storewide safety cap can protect carts from accidental or abusive quantities, but it is intentionally broad. A product or variant rule is better when scarcity, sampling, hazardous shipping, or campaign fairness applies only to certain items.
Collection rules are convenient for launches, yet collection membership changes. Check whether newly added products should inherit the maximum and whether removed products should stop receiving it.
Boundary test: for a maximum of two, test quantities 1, 2, and 3. Then test a different variant, a second protected product, and every cart or accelerated-checkout path the store exposes.
Guide first, enforce at the final cart
Disable or constrain the quantity control where possible, and place “Maximum 2 per order” next to it. That prevents ordinary mistakes. It is not enough by itself: quick-add buttons, cart editing, direct links, and integrations may use a different path.
Validate the completed cart before the order is accepted. The correction should identify the item, state the permitted quantity, and disappear immediately when the shopper fixes it.
Plan the end of a temporary cap
Launch and promotion limits need an owner and an end condition. Use a schedule when the policy has known dates; otherwise add its removal to the campaign checklist. An old maximum can quietly suppress ordinary repeat purchases long after inventory has recovered.
The correct maximum is not merely a number. It is a precise scope, a visible explanation, reliable enforcement, and a decision about when the restriction should stop.
