How to announce a free shipping offer on Shopify
Turn a shipping threshold into a short, accurate storefront message that tells shoppers what qualifies and where the offer applies.
“Free shipping” is not a complete offer when it requires a $75 basket, excludes some destinations, or ends on Sunday. The announcement should make the benefit attractive without making the qualification disappear.
The best bar copy usually contains three things: the benefit, the main threshold, and a path to any terms that genuinely affect eligibility. Start with the shipping rule already configured in the store; the banner must describe that rule, not invent a more generous one.
Lead with the benefit and keep the condition beside it
“Free shipping on orders over $75” is stronger than “Spend $75” because it tells the shopper what the threshold unlocks. If the offer is limited to a country, include the region when space allows: “Free US shipping over $75.”
Avoid using an asterisk as a substitute for the main condition. Fine details can live on a shipping page, but the amount, destination, customer group, or promotion end date that changes most buyers' eligibility belongs in or beside the message.
Compact examples: “Free US shipping over $75” · “Members get free shipping this weekend” · “Free local delivery on orders over $40.”
Send the click somewhere useful
A standing threshold can link to shipping information. A short campaign may link to an eligible collection. Make the destination match the promise: sending every shipping message to the homepage adds a click without answering anything.
On the destination page, explain exclusions in plain language and use the same threshold and geography as the announcement. Contradictory copy makes the cart feel unreliable even when the checkout calculation is correct.
Check that discounts do not change the threshold unexpectedly
Decide whether eligibility is based on the cart before or after discounts and make sure the configured shipping rule follows that decision. Test a cart exactly at the threshold, just below it, and above it before applying a promotion code.
Also test excluded items, destinations, currencies, and customer groups where relevant. The announcement is seen early; a surprise shipping charge is discovered late.
Retire campaign copy with the campaign
A permanent free-shipping policy can remain stable. A weekend offer needs a clear timezone and automatic expiry or a named person responsible for removing it. Countdown language is useful only when the deadline is real and the bar disappears when that deadline passes.
Preview the final message on a narrow phone. If the benefit and threshold cannot be understood in one pass, shorten the copy before reducing the type or making the bar taller.
